As an English teacher, this made me weep tears of awestruck joy.
"Now, you listen to me, James Hawkins.
You got the makings of greatness in you,
but you got to take the helm and chart your own course.
Stick to it, no matter the squalls! And when the time comes,
you get the chance to really test the cut of your sails,
and show what you're made of! Well, I hope I'm there,
catching some of the light coming off you that day."

MY HAT IS AMAZING
GURREN LAGANN SPOILERS AHEAD. SKIP THIS POST IF YOU DON’T WANT TO RUIN EVERYTHING
So far I have blazed through Gurren Lagann at about the same breakneck speed the show moves. Every episode leads to a new fight, emotionally and physically.
But what I really wanted to talk about is how well the show handles its characters so far. More specifically the death of a very important one. It’s not very often that a show deals with the actual loss of a character instead of just the shock in the moment. You feel it, the characters feel it, and the cast feels incomplete without him (in a surprisingly good way). Of course his ideals and willpower live on in the people inspired by his ways and the entirety of the situation is handled incredibly well.
I am starting to fall in love with Hiroyuki Imaishi’s directing style. It’s all about action but it blends the emotional character development right in with every encounter (FIGHT WITH YOUR FEELINGS!) Go give it a watch, I highly recommend it.
I’ll probably do another post whenever I finish the series, which will most likely be tomorrow. Can’t stop watching.
And remember this: YOUR DRILL IS THE DRILL THAT WILL PIERCE THE HEAVENS!!!
